What is digital paper?

The digital or interactive paper is a digital device, with which ‘handwritten’ data can be stored. The digital paper comprises of dot patterns printed on it. The dots are electro- statically charged capsules or beads. They are pressed in between two transparent plastic sheets. The dots identify the paper’s position coordinates. The data such as words and pictures can be drawn on the digital paper using a digital pen. The words written on the paper with the digital pen are stored in the same manner in which they are written. Later the data can be stored into computer, by transferring it through data chord. Digital paper is completely different than the electronic paper.

Overview of Logitech’s A4 Digital Notebook Paper

Logitech has introduced a complete notebook which comprises of several digital papers. There are variants of these notebooks, depending on size and features. The A4 notebook has the regular size similar to the standard paper notebook. The digital “smart paper” notebook is used with the digital pen named, “Io pen”.

The technology is simple to understand. As the words are written on the digital paper by Io pen, the pattern of dots on the paper is read by the pen. The pattern of these small dots read by the pen is converted into digital form. S, whatever is written on the paper is converted into digital bits by the pen. The digitized data can now be uploaded on the computer. The data stored in the computer can be further used in the form of calendar entries, e- mail or to- do list.

Logitech has launched the digital notebooks as well as the digital Io pens in variety of colors, shapes and sizes.

Key Features of Io Pen and Digital Paper

The Io pen is like a bulky ball point pen. It comprises of ink cartilage, with which the handwritten matter is seen on the paper. The pen cap is the ON / OFF switch for the pen. To remove the ink cartilage, a small hole at the clip is used. The pen is provided with 2 two tricolor LEDs. One of this indicates the battery, while the other indicates the memory status. Battery needs to recharge, after writing up to 25 pages of Logitech digital paper. Green color in the LED indicates, battery is full, yellow means charging is less than 50%, while red means battery is discharged. The user interface also comprises of vibrating function as feedback.

For data interfacing with computer USB chord is provided. The Io pen holds the stroke memory of 856 KBytes. The Io pen’s battery is a lithium battery which is rechargeable. The battery can last for 3hrs with continuous usage, 20hrs in standby mode and 280 days with the cap on the pen.
